VO2 Max Calculator
Estimate your maximal oxygen uptake from either the distance covered in a 12-minute Cooper run, or from your maximum and resting heart rates with the Uth-Sorensen formula. Results are rough field estimates, not lab values.
What VO2 max is
VO2 max is the highest rate at which your body can take in and use oxygen during hard exercise, written in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute. It is a standard measure of aerobic fitness and is associated in large studies with lower risk of cardiovascular disease and early death. Direct measurement needs a laboratory test with a mask and a gas analyser while you exercise to exhaustion, so field tests and formulas provide convenient estimates.
Typical values vary by age and sex: untrained young adults often fall in the 30s to 40s, and well-trained endurance athletes exceed 60. The number declines gradually with age, and training can raise it.
The Cooper 12-minute test
In 1968 Kenneth Cooper published a field test in which the participant runs as far as possible in 12 minutes. The distance d in metres predicts VO2 max as:
VO2 max = (d − 504.9) ÷ 44.73
For 2,400 m this gives (2400 − 504.9) ÷ 44.73 = 42.4 mL/kg/min. Test conditions matter: use a flat measured track, warm up, pace yourself evenly and avoid hot or windy weather. Your first attempt will usually be less well paced than your third. The test is demanding, so it is not appropriate for beginners, for anyone with heart or lung problems, or after a long break without medical clearance.
The heart rate ratio method
Uth and colleagues (2004) proposed estimating VO2 max from the ratio of maximum to resting heart rate: VO2 max = 15.3 × HRmax ÷ HRrest. A maximum of 190 and a resting rate of 60 gives 15.3 × 3.17 = 48.5 mL/kg/min. It needs no running, which makes it easy, but it is sensitive to the accuracy of both numbers. An age-formula maximum does not reflect your real value, and a resting rate taken after coffee or poor sleep distorts the result. The authors noted that the method may overestimate in highly trained people, so treat it as a rough indication for the general population.
Limits and cautions
Neither method replaces a laboratory test, and they can disagree with each other by several units. Use the same method each time to track change. Medicines such as beta-blockers affect heart rate and make the Uth method unreliable. Pregnancy, heart disease, high blood pressure, chest pain and joint problems call for medical advice before testing. For training zones based on heart rate, see the target heart rate calculator. Worked example
After a warm-up, a runner covers 2,800 metres in 12 minutes on a flat track.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good VO2 max?
It depends on age and sex. Many healthy young adults are in the 30s to 40s mL/kg/min, and elite endurance athletes can exceed 70. Compare your result with norm tables for your age group.
How accurate is the Cooper test?
It correlates well with lab VO2 max in groups, but individual estimates can be off by several units, especially with poor pacing or a first attempt. Treat it as an approximation.
How can I improve my VO2 max?
Regular aerobic training raises it, and interval training with hard efforts of a few minutes is especially effective. Gains are largest in people who start untrained. A coach or clinician can tailor the plan.
Is the Uth heart rate method reliable?
It is a simple estimate that works best for average people with an accurately measured maximum heart rate. It can overstate fitness in very trained people, and it breaks down if you take medicines that lower heart rate.
Why does my smartwatch give a different VO2 max?
Watches estimate it from pace and heart rate data during runs using their own models. Each method has its own errors, so only compare values from the same source over time.
