Tip Calculator: Tip, Total and Split the Bill

Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people sharing it. You get the tip, the final total and each person's share, plus a table comparing other tip percentages on the same bill.

The total on the check, in any currency.

The arithmetic behind a tip

A tip is a percentage of an amount, so the working is short:

Tip = amount × tip % ÷ 100

Total = bill + tip

Each share = total ÷ number of people

For a bill of 84.50 with an 18% tip, the tip is 84.50 × 0.18 = 15.21. The total is 99.71, and four people each pay 24.93 after rounding to the nearest cent. A quick mental method is to find 10% by moving the decimal point one place, then add or halve it: 10% of 84.50 is 8.45, and doubling it gives 16.90 for 20%.

Tipping before or after tax

Whether the tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount or on the full check is a matter of habit and etiquette, and customs differ by place. Choosing the pre-tax basis lowers the tip a little, because tax is excluded from the base. Choose the second option above, then enter the tax shown on the receipt, and the calculator subtracts it before applying the percentage.

The total still includes the tax, since you pay it. With a bill of 120 that contains 20 of tax, a 20% tip on the pre-tax 100 is 20, giving a total of 140, whereas the same percentage on the full 120 would be 24.

Rounding and splitting fairly

Two rounding options are provided because people tip in different ways. Rounding the total up to a whole number is convenient when paying cash. Rounding each person's share up to a whole number makes sure that everyone can pay a round amount, though it leaves a slightly larger tip. Either way the tip shown is adjusted, and the effective tip percentage of the bill is displayed so that you can see the real rate after rounding.

Splitting evenly assumes everyone ordered about the same amount. If one person had a much larger meal, it is usually fairer to divide the food separately and then share the tip in proportion.

Customs, service charges and limits

Typical tip percentages differ widely between countries and between kinds of service, and in some places tipping is not expected at all. This page does not assume a standard rate: the percentage is yours to set, and the comparison table simply shows common steps. Check the receipt before tipping, because a service charge may already be included. Adding a further tip on top is a personal choice, not an obligation that this calculator can judge.

Group dining adds one more wrinkle: some venues add a gratuity automatically for larger parties. If that applies, enter the bill with the charge included and set the tip percentage to zero, so that the share per person still comes out right.

Worked example

A group of four receives a bill of 84.50 and wants to leave an 18% tip, splitting the total evenly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 15 or 20 percent tip quickly?

Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place to the left. For 20%, double it; for 15%, add half of the 10% figure to it. These shortcuts avoid a calculator.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Practice varies. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, others on the whole check. This calculator supports both: choose the pre-tax option and enter the tax shown on your receipt.

How do I split a bill with a tip evenly?

Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide by the number of people. The calculator shows the share per person and rounds it to the cent.

What is the effective tip percentage?

It is the final tip divided by the bill. It matters when you round up or tip on the pre-tax amount, because the actual percentage of the full bill then differs from the one you entered.

Does the calculator include a service charge?

No. If the restaurant has already added a service charge, treat it as part of the bill or as the tip itself, then decide whether to add anything more.
