Gold Tola Converter: Tola, Masha, Ratti and Grams
Convert gold weights between the traditional South Asian units (tola, masha, ratti) and grams or troy ounces, then see how much pure gold a piece contains at a chosen karat purity. No prices are used.
How tola, masha and ratti relate
The tola is a traditional South Asian unit of weight, long used for gold and silver. This converter uses the standard value of 1 tola = 11.6638038 grams, equal to 180 grains. The smaller units divide it as follows:
- 1 tola = 12 masha
- 1 masha = 8 ratti
- So 1 tola = 96 ratti, and 1 masha = 0.97198365 g
- 1 ratti ≈ 0.1215 g
Gold is also traded internationally by the troy ounce, which is exactly 31.1034768 grams. Because 11.6638038 × 8 = 93.3104304 and 31.1034768 × 3 = 93.3104304, one troy ounce is exactly 8/3 tola, or about 2.6667 tola.
Karat purity and pure gold content
Karat (spelled with a K) measures the purity of gold on a scale of 24. Pure gold is 24 karat. A 22 karat piece is 22 parts gold in 24, which is 91.67% gold, and 18 karat is 75%. The remaining share is other metals such as copper or silver that add hardness or change the colour.
To find pure gold, multiply the total weight by karat ÷ 24. A 1 tola piece at 22 karat contains 11.6638038 × 22 ÷ 24 = 10.692 g of gold. Do not confuse karat with the carat used for gem weight: a gemstone carat is 200 milligrams.

Cautions when buying or selling
Some sellers round a tola to 11.66 g or even 11.664 g, and regional customs can differ, so ask in writing which value a shop uses. Jewellery weights usually include stones, clasps and solder, and gold buyers normally price only the gold content after testing. Making charges, wastage deductions and taxes vary by seller and country.
This tool converts weight only. It contains no gold prices, because prices change throughout the day. Use a current quote from a trusted dealer and the pure-gold figure above to estimate value.
A worked example makes the steps concrete. A ring weighing 4.5 g at 18 karat holds 4.5 × 18 ÷ 24 = 3.375 g of gold. Expressed in the traditional units that is 3.375 ÷ 11.6638038 = 0.289 tola, about 3.5 masha. Entering 4.5 grams into the converter and choosing 18 karat reproduces the same figures in one step.
For small items, the ratti and masha are the practical units, and for bars and bullion the gram, kilogram and troy ounce are standard. Always weigh on a calibrated scale, and keep the original receipt, since it records the weight and purity that were agreed at the time of purchase.
Worked example
A set of jewellery weighs 5 tola and is stamped 22 karat. How many grams is that, and how much of it is pure gold?
