CGPA to Percentage Calculator
Convert a cumulative grade point average to a percentage, or a percentage back to CGPA. Pick the conversion rule your institution uses, set the scale, and see a reference table for nearby values.
Two common conversion rules
A CGPA is a grade point average on a scale such as 10, 5 or 4. A percentage is a different measure, and there is no single worldwide formula linking them. This page offers the two rules that are most often quoted.
- Multiply by a factor.
Percentage = CGPA × factor. The factor 9.5 is the one published by CBSE for its 10-point CGPA, which is why 8.2 becomes 77.9%. Some institutions state a different factor, so the field is editable. - Simple ratio.
Percentage = CGPA ÷ maximum × 100. A 3.5 on a 4.0 scale becomes 87.5%, and an 8 on a 10-point scale becomes 80%.
To go the other way, divide: CGPA = percentage ÷ factor, or CGPA = percentage ÷ 100 × maximum.
Why the factor is not always 10
On a 10-point scale a grade of 10 does not usually mean 100 marks. Grade bands cover ranges of marks, and the top band often starts well below 100. A conversion factor below 10 reflects that the typical mark behind a grade point sits a little under the points-times-ten level. Because each board or university designs its own bands, the factor is a policy choice, not a mathematical law.
Some institutions publish formulas with an offset, or a table that maps each CGPA band to a percentage range instead of a single formula. If your institution does either, use its published method; the numbers here are only as good as the rule you select.
Where the converted value is used
Application forms, scholarship portals and some employers ask for a percentage even when a transcript shows only CGPA. In many cases they accept a statement of the conversion rule or a certificate from the institution. Quote the exact rule and attach the official document when possible, because a rounded number from a calculator may be questioned.
| CGPA (10-point) | × 9.5 | Ratio rule |
|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | 57.0% | 60.0% |
| 7.0 | 66.5% | 70.0% |
| 8.0 | 76.0% | 80.0% |
| 9.0 | 85.5% | 90.0% |
The gap between the two rules grows as the CGPA rises, which shows how much the choice matters.
Limits
This is a calculator, not an official equivalence. Results are shown to two decimals and are not rounded to the nearest whole number as some forms require. Percentages above 100 mean the chosen factor does not suit the scale. For the weighted average of several courses by credit, use the GPA calculator first and convert the result here.
Finally, keep the two directions consistent. If you convert a CGPA to a percentage and then convert that percentage back, a rule that does not fit your scale will not return the original number. Such a mismatch is a sign to recheck the factor, the scale or the institution's own regulation before submitting anything.
Worked example
A student with a CGPA of 8.2 out of 10 applies the common multiply-by-9.5 rule to estimate a percentage for a form that asks for one.
Inputs
| Convert | CGPA to percentage |
|---|---|
| Conversion rule | Multiply CGPA by a factor (percentage = CGPA × factor) |
| Maximum CGPA on your scale | 10 |
| Multiplication factor | 9.5 |
| Your CGPA | 8.2 |
Result
8.20 out of 10 using percentage = CGPA × 9.5.
| Rule used | percentage = CGPA × 9.5 |
|---|---|
| Maximum CGPA | 10 |

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Multiply the CGPA by the factor your institution specifies, such as 9.5 for the CBSE rule on a 10-point scale. If no factor is given, divide by the maximum and multiply by 100.
Is the multiplier always 9.5?
No. 9.5 is the figure published by CBSE for its 10-point system. Other boards and universities use different factors or tables, so confirm the rule that applies to your own institution.
How do I convert percentage to CGPA?
Reverse the rule. With the factor method, divide the percentage by the factor, for example 77.9 divided by 9.5 equals 8.2. With the ratio method, divide by 100 and multiply by the scale maximum.
Can I convert a 4.0 GPA to a percentage with this?
Yes, by choosing the ratio rule with a maximum of 4. Be aware that 4.0 scales do not map neatly to marks, so many evaluators use their own conversion tables instead.
Will employers accept a calculated percentage?
Practices vary. Some accept a stated conversion, while others ask for an official certificate from the institution. Check the instructions on the form or ask the recruiter.
